Prisoner recaptured minutes after escape from New Amsterdam Prison

A prisoner who made a brazen escape early Friday from the New Amsterdam Prison has since been recaptured.

Director of Prisons Gladwin Samuels said the prisoner, Rei Joseph, jumped the prison fence during the unlocking of the prison at about 06:51hrs.

Ranks in the prison towers saw Joseph escaping and raised an alarm.

He was recaptured at Smithfield, New Amsterdam at 07:10hrs after being pursued by the ranks.

Joseph is serving a fifteen-month sentence for simple larceny. His date of release is December 11, 2020.

The incident is being investigated.
