Gold miner found floating in well at Puruni Landing

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of Calvin Hamilton, a 29-year-old gold miner of Aranaputa Village, Annai Region 9.

Hamilton’s partially decomposed body was found floating in a well at Puruni Landing, Mazaruni River on Sunday, July 19 at about 17:00h. The body was also found with a puncture wound to the leg.

Police Headquarters revealed that Hamilton could have died sometime between Friday and Sunday.  He was employed with Hard Hock Mining Company as a pitman.

The General Manager of the company, who is a Brazilian national, told Police that Hamilton left the mining camp on Friday last at about 16:00h for Puruni Landing. He was then seen drinking at a bar and subsequently left at about 19:00h.

Hamilton’s body was discovered after the owner of the bar told his employee to pump water from the well. The well is located about 400 feet away from the bar.

The body was transported to the Bartica Regional Hospital and subsequently taken to Lyken Funeral Home where it awaits post mortem exam.
