Police Headquarters on Tuesday reported that a male prisoner who was in custody at the Springlands Police Station in Berbice is now under police guard at the Skeldon Public Hospital after claiming that he ingested poison.
The man was arrested on a rape charge.
Police said at around 01:00hrs Tuesday, checks were made at the lockups and the prisoner complained of stomach pains.
He reportedly claimed that he had ingested a poisonous substance earlier in the day.
The prisoner remains under observation at the hospital.
