All old-age pensioners across Guyana will receive a $28,000 one-off cash grant before the end of this year, President Dr. Irfaan Ali announced on Thursday evening.

The Head of State, speaking during a live broadcast, said this sum will provide an additional $1.8 billion in disposable income to this group of citizens.

The President said this relief measure joins other strides made in supporting elderly citizens over the past two years, since his government assumed office.

He reminded the public that since assuming office in August 2020, old age pension was increased from $20,500 to $25,000 and then from $25,000 to $28,000 in 2022.

“That is a 36 per cent increase in two years, placing $22 billion in the hands of old age pensioners annually,” Dr. Ali said.

He also reminded the public that in 2021, a one-off grant of $25,000 grant was paid to all old-age pensioners, placing $1.6 billion in disposable income into the economy.

Aside from these cash measures, more accessible, improved healthcare and social services are part of plans to provide a better quality of life to the elderly folks.
