Mahendra Paltoo, a 35-year-old labourer of Bloomfield, Corentyne, Berbice who is accused of chopping his wife to death, was recently released from prison.
The News Room was reliably informed that Paltoo was charged and sentenced to one-year imprisonment for wounding a man. He was released in March this year during which he got into a relationship with 30-year-old Oma Devi Virasamy of Hampshire, Corentyne.
On Sunday, Virasamy was brutally chopped about her body during an argument with Paltoo.
Paltoo has since confessed to police that he murdered the woman. He had initially told relatives and investigators that Virasamy was making up the bed when she fell on the cutlass that was tucked between the two mattresses, resulting in her injuries.
He said that he did not take the woman to the hospital; instead, he helped her dress the wound and she later succumbed to the injuries while in bed.
But after he was arrested, the story changed. The man reportedly confessed that he and Virasamy had an argument during which he chopped her with a cutlass. She bled to death from those chop wounds.
The News Room was informed that Paltoo told investigators that Virasamy had accused him of being unfaithful.
He said that during the argument, Virasamy shoved him and he retaliated by arming himself with a cutlass.
He chopped her to the right ankle, under her left eye and other parts of her body.
Meanwhile, Virasamy’s uncle, Deodat Arjuman, told reporters that she was a good person. He said after she got back into the relationship with Paltoo, she left her parents’ home.
“She was a very good girl but then she get fuh like this boy and go away with this boy,” the uncle said.
Her relatives never saw her again and according to the uncle, when Virasamy’s mother died recently, Paltoo did not allow her to attend the funeral.
Relatives only learned about Virsamy’s injuries on Monday.
Paltoo’s father, Mukesh disclosed that on Monday morning, his wife woke him up and informed him that Paltoo had called seeking assistance and told them that “he wife get cut.”
Mukesh said he drove to his son’s house and discovered the horrific scene.
He then took his son to the police station and reported the incident.
