Play School, house maliciously set on fire in separate incidents

Two buildings, one of which housed a Play School were destroyed by separate fires on Tuesday morning and Sunday and the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) has revealed that the fires were maliciously set.

In a press statement issued on Tuesday, the GFS said it received a call at 03.35hrs about a fire at Market Street, Wales, West Bank Demerara.

“The fire, which was the result of a malicious setting by unknown persons, destroyed the house, leaving the two occupants homeless,” the Fire Service said.

Meanwhile, in a separate incident, a fire on Sunday gutted the Little Treasures Play School located at Lot 2021 Golden Fleece, West Coast Berbice.

According to the GFS, the interior of the building, along with a number of household items, such as a wooden cupboard and two chairs, were damaged.

The two-storey structure was owned by 59-year-old Ronda Archer.

The GFS is warning persons that acts of arson are illegal and once caught, the perpetrators will be prosecuted.

“The Guyana Fire Service wants to emphasize once more that arson attacks are illegal and that once caught, perpetrators will face the full brunt of the law,” the GFS said.

“Citizens are encouraged to report suspected arson attacks or any related information to the police,” the release concluded.
