A new Amazonia-styled housing settlement will be established locally with the construction of the first 50 houses starting in about three months’ time, President Dr. Irfaan Ali announced on Wednesday.

While speaking at the launch of DuraVilla homes’ new 1000+ modular timber housing project, the Head of State said the new settlement aims to illustrate how luxurious wooden houses can be.

The 50 houses will be a mix of colonial-style and modern architecture. President Ali also said the houses will be eco-friendly.

“This facility will not only have luxury homes made out of 100 per cent Guyanese wood and labour, but will have trees planted.

“(It will be) full Amazonia-style luxury,” he said too.

It is not yet clear where this new settlement will be established but the President tasked Minister of Housing and Water Collin Croal and Minister within the Housing Ministry Susan Rodrigues with working on the project.

And though the project will leverage the growing ready-made housing industry, the President said other wooden products can be marketed.

Such ventures, he believes, will help to increase earnings from the forestry sector without compromising Guyana’s environmental commitments.
