‘My political career is not over’- outgoing G/town Mayor eyes new opportunities

Georgetown Mayor Ubraj Narine did not contest this year’s Local Government Elections but he declared on Tuesday that his political career is not over.

The newly-elected representatives of the capital city should be declared by the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) sometime on Tuesday.

Of the 30 representatives from 15 constituencies across Georgetown elected, one person will eventually be chosen as Mayor when the City Council meets.

Already though, Narine said there will be a smooth transition from him to the next mayor since all necessary documents have been prepared and will be handed over to the next individual.

And Narine said he looks forward to continuing political work when he leaves office.

“Demitting the Office of the Mayor will give me more opportunities.

“… This will not be the end of my political career. I will be on the ground,” the Mayor said during a live press conference.

He added that he intends on working alongside his colleagues in the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) to secure more support for the 2025 General and Regional Elections. Narine also said that more groundwork will be done to maintain APNU’s control of the city beyond this year’s Local Government Elections.

After the 2018 Local Government Elections, Narine was elected Mayor when the councillors of the municipality of Georgetown met.

He had won Constituency One (Kingston East and West, Thomas Lands, Nonpareil Park, Cummingsburg, Alberttown and Queenstown).

That year, APNU won 21 of the 30 seats of the CIty Council; the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) clinched seven seats and the Alliance For Change (AFC) copped two seats.

keep to politics. That suits you.
I would never trust you to do a jhandi for me. I could mostly do a jhandi for you because I am sure God would listen to me more than you. I don’t tell lies and half-truths all the time.
It’s good that you’re going though, You were an incompetent mayor, anyway.
