Driver who struck woman and drove away arrested hours later

Police in Region Three (Essequibo Islands- West Demerara) have arrested a 31-year-old hire car driver who struck and injured a woman on Wednesday at Parika, East Bank Essequibo (EBE).

Police Commander Mahendra Sewnarine told the News Room that the driver, Navindra Persaud was arrested around 16:30hrs.

He is presently in custody at the Parika Police station as traffic officers await a medical report from the victim, Sewnarine said.

Persaud is likely to face a series of traffic related charges, including failing to render assistance and reckless driving.

In a video which went viral on social media, the driver was seen driving motor car, HD 2750 in a reckless manner along the East Bank Essequibo Public Road.

And after almost causing a serious accident due to the manner in which he was driving, the driver later struck a woman.

He subsequently stopped and uttered a few words to the woman but left the scene without offering the injured woman any assistance.
