Labourer remanded for murder of drinking buddy

Eighteen-year-old Kevin Somrah was on Thursday remanded to prison for the murder of 25-year-old Pursoram Ganpat, a rice farmer, who was stabbed to death on June 12, 2023.

Somrah, a resident of Queenstown, Upper Corentyne, appeared before Magistrate Renita Singh at the Springlands Magistrate’s Court to answer to the charge of Murder Contrary to Common Law.

It is alleged that on the day in question, Somrah murdered Ganpat at Crain Street, Corriverton. He was not required to plea to the indictable charge and was remanded to prison until July 27, 2023, for report.

According to the Police report, the victim of Well Rank Dam, No.57 Village and the suspect were imbibing when a heated argument ensued and then led to a scuffle. During the scuffle, the suspect reportedly armed himself with a knife and stabbed the victim several times.

The injured man was rushed to the Port Mourant Hospital where he died while receiving treatment.
