Speeding driver, 60, dies in West Berbice accident

Carlton Maltay, a 60-year-old of East Canje, Berbice died in the wee hours of Monday while two occupants of his car survived an accident on the Cotton Tree Public Road, West Coast Berbice.

Police said the fatal accident occurred at around 02:00hrs and involved motor car #PWW 5977, driven 22-year-old by Rajendra Deonarine of Bath Settlement.

Deonarine also had two occupants in his car.

Police said Maltay was proceeding in the northern drive lane at a fast rate and while negotiating a turn, he lost control of the vehicle and collided with Deonarine’s car.

As a result of the collision, Maltay and occupants (Auria Maltay and Jurjan  MacAndrew) received injuries and were picked up in an unconscious condition and taken to Fort Wellington Public Hospital, where the Auria and Jurjan were seen and examined by a doctor and transferred to New Amsterdam Public Hospital.

Maltay was pronounced dead and his body is presently lying at Fort Wellington Public Hospital’s Mortuary.

The other vehicle’s driver, Deonarine, was admitted to the Fort Wellington Public Hospital for observation. The two occupants in his vehicle were not injured.

Investigations are ongoing
