Four months after 39-year-old Sursattie Prasad was struck down and killed, a 27-year-old driver was on Tuesday charged in relation to the accident and placed on $300,000 bail.

Ryan Boodhoo of Block Eight, Tuschen New Housing Scheme, East Bank Essequibo (EBE), appeared before Magistrate Zamilla Ally-Seepaul at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court.

It is alleged that on May 5, on the Good Hope Public Road, EBE, Boodhoo drove motor car, PMM 3473, in a manner dangerous to the public, thereby causing the death of Prasad.

Boohoo was not required to plead to the indictable charge.

He was placed on bail and the case was adjourned to December 18 for report and fixture.

Police Headquarters reported that Boodhoo was driving east along the northern lane of the road, at a fast rate when he reportedly swerved to avoid colliding with motor van, GAC 4554.

In the process, the left front of the car collided with Prasad, who was flung into the air and then into a Guyana Power and Light (GPL) light pole. The car ended up in a nearby trench

The van was being driven by a Chinese national of Anna Catherina, West Coast Demerara.

Both Boodhoo and the driver of the van were arrested. However, only Boodhoo was charged based on legal advice received by the Police.

Prasad was picked up in an unconscious condition and transported to the Leonora Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

A breathalyzer test revealed that Boodhoo had some level of alcohol in his system at the time of the accident.

However, no trace of alcohol was detected on the driver of the van.
