A 60-year-old woman and her two sons are now homeless and counting their losses after a fire destroyed their lot 64 No.12 Village, West Coast Berbice house on Tuesday evening.

Sukhwantie Ramnarine said she left home at 02:00 hrs for the Bourda Market where she plies her trade while her sons, ages 19 and 21, left home at around 08:00 hrs.

    The family’s house on fire

It was while she was on her way back home at around 17:00 hrs that she was informed her house was on fire. When she arrived, the house was completely engulfed in flames and nothing could be saved.

Ramnarine who has been a vendor for over 10 years, said she worked and built her house “little by little” with all comfort and amenities.

According to the distraught homeowner, she had over $500,000 in cash at the house which she would have used to pay farmers and purchase more vegetables.

The building was a two-storey wooden upstairs and concrete bottom flat with four bedrooms. Ramnarine is estimating over $10 million in losses. The cause of the fire is not yet known; Ramnarine claimed that she would always ensure everything is plugged out before leaving the house.

Persons who are desirous of assisting the woman in rebuilding can contact her on telephone number 675-9448.
