Essequibo businessman held over possession of unlicensed firearm, ammo

Police responding to a report of domestic violence and threats on Tuesday arrested an Essequibo businessman after he was allegedly found in possession of an unlicensed firearm and several rounds of ammunition.

In custody is Pooran Manman called Rocky, 44, of Abram Zuil, Essequibo Coast.

Police Headquarters said at around 20:30hrs, ranks on the Essequibo Coast received information about threats and domestic violence committed against the businessman’s 37-year-old wife at their house.

As a result, the ranks went to the house and told the businessman of the report made against him.

Whilst there, Police said a search was conducted in Manman’s bedroom and one 9mm pistol, one 7.65mm pistol, 269 rounds of .32 ammunition,  twenty-one 12-gauge cartridges,  nine 16-gauge cartridges, twenty-four .32 spent shells and two .32 magazine were found insider a drawer.

“The businessman was asked if he was the holder of a firearm license, and he said that he was the holder of a license for the 7.65mm pistol, but did not have a license for the 9mm pistol which he claimed to have purchased from a man at Dartmouth who is now deceased,” Police Headquarters noted.

The suspect was arrested and taken to the Anna Regina police station.

Police have since took possession of the unlicensed 9mm firearm and ammunition as the investigation continues.
