A woman deliberately set a Norton Street, Wortmanville, Georgetown house on fire on Wednesday at about 06:40 hrs.

According to a release from the Guyana Fire Service, the building was owned by the late Carlton Holder and occupied by Tinesa Lewis and fourteen others.

It was noted that neighbours spotted smoke on the ground floor’s eastern side and promptly formed a bucket brigade, extinguishing the fire before firefighters arrived. Still, the two-storey wooden and concrete building and furniture inside sustained substantial damage.

As firefighters investigated the fire, Lewis reportedly said she suspected the fire was maliciously set, citing it as the third such occurrence.

Neighbours and other residents denied witnessing malicious acts.

Footage from CCTV cameras was, however, reviewed and the investigators saw a woman attempting to start a fire through a window, confirming that the fire was intentionally set.

The matter was handed over to the Guyana Police Force, resulting in the arrest of the main suspect for further investigations.
