A 40-year-old man of Port Kaituma, North West District was sentenced to nine years imprisonment for killing his reputed wife after he found her dancing with another man.

The sentenced was imposed on Tyrone James by Justice Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Demerara High Court.

Last month, James was indicted for the capital offence of murder, but opted to plead to the lesser count of manslaughter.

He admitted to unlawfully killing 37-year-old Evadnee Baptiste on July 15, 2018, at Water Front, Port Kaituma.

On Friday, the judge, after considering the nature of the case, sentenced James to nine years imprisonment and ordered that the prison authorities deduct the time he spent on remand from the sentence.

The News Room had reported that the two shared a common law relationship and on the day in question at about 16:00hrs, the woman was at the Port Kaituma Water Front at a place known as ‘’the crack’ with her friends.

Hours later, James found her dancing with another man during which he cuffed her to the head and caused her to fall.

He then reported the matter to the Port Kaituma Police Station. Police took the woman to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.

A post-mortem examination revealed that Baptiste died from a brain hemorrhage due to blunt trauma to the head.
