A man hailing from Cotton Tree, West Coast Berbice, was remanded to prison following his arraignment for the alleged manslaughter of Kiran Bacchus, his brother and a fellow mason from the same village.
The accused, identified as 27-year-old Deepak Bacchus, appeared before Magistrate Ravindra Mohabir at the Blairmont Magistrate’s Court.
During proceedings, Deepak, who was without legal representation, was not called upon to enter a plea concerning the grave charge levied against him.
However, after careful consideration, the court denied him bail, citing the serious nature of the accusation.
Deepak is scheduled to return to court for his next hearing on January 28th, where further developments in the case will be addressed.
Police had said in a statement that Deepak lives with his wife, Tena, and his mother Sookranie Bacchus.
Kiran lived next door with his wife, Seeta Churchand.
At about 01:30 hrs on January 1, Deepak reportedly prevented Kiran’s wife from entering their yard.
This led to a physical altercation between Deepak and Kiran.
“Kiran struck his head, causing him to bleed from his nose and appear dazed. He was quickly transported to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, where he died while receiving treatment,” Police reported.
His wife, Seeta, told investigators that in 2015, her husband suffered a head injury in Trinidad due to an attack by two men where he was chopped and had to undergo surgery.
After Kiran died, Deepak was arrested. During a video interview, Deepak shared a different version of what transpired.
Deepak reportedly said he was at home with his mother and wife when he saw Kiran and Seeta attempting to push down their front gate. When they approached him, Kiran attacked him leading to a struggle that caused Kiran to fall.
Deepak alleged that while Kiran was on the ground, he struck (cuffed) him twice, and then noticed blood coming from Kiran’s nose. He attempted to clean the blood, and with assistance from his mother and a driver, they took Kiran to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, where he later passed away.
On January 2nd, a postmortem examination conducted on Kiran’s body found that he died from asphyxia along with blood in the airway.
