Robbery spirals in Berbice; Police working with Residents to address issue

Two persons were robbed at gunpoint on the wee hours of Sunday morning at different locations on the Corentyne Coast. This adds to a recent spate of robberies reported in the Berbice area.

 

At around 03:30 hours on Sunday, Abdul Malik Kissoon of Lot 19 Nigg Settlement, Corentyne, was returning home from a wedding when a man jumped out of a nearby “bushy” area and robbed him at gunpoint.

 

He was relieved of a Samsung Galaxy Cell phone and jewellery.

 

According to the police, no one has been arrested thus far in connection with the incident.

 

Meanwhile, another man was also robbed in Port Mourant Village, in the early hours of Sunday morning. The man whose name was undisclosed was robbed by a perpetrator allegedly carrying a gun.

 

He was relieved of an undisclosed amount of cash.

 

News Room spoke to Officer in Charge of the Corentyne District, Deputy Superintendent, Marlon Taylor who noted that the force is conducting meetings with residents across the district to garner their support in its crime fighting strategies.

 

He noted that his division is also using the opportunity to listen to the plight of the residents.

 

At a meeting at Nigg Settlement, Corentyne he urged residents to be “your brother’s keeper” and keep an eye on suspicious activities in the Community.  He urged persons to form vigilante groups in an effort to keep the community safe and rid of criminals with the assistance of ranks of ‘B’ Division.
