Bank security killed in suspected robbery

The police in ‘F’ Division are investigating the stabbing death of 31-year-old Haimchan Persaud called Raj.

The man who resides at 378 Tabatinga, Lethem is said to be a security supervisor at the Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry (GBTI) facility in Lethem.

The News Room has been informed that the man and his wife were walking along a dark and lonely road in the North Rupununi when they were approached and attacked by a man who had earlier changed his garment as a means of disguising himself.

Prior to attacking the man and his wife, News Room was told that the suspect was seen standing across the road from the path which the victim and his wife were preparing to walk. As the suspect approached and advanced towards Persaud, Persaud retaliated and that prompted the man to inflict one stab wound to his chest before running and departing on a parked motorcycle which was a short distance away.

The incident occurred at about 02:30 hours this morning (Tuesday, April 18, 2017).

Persaud was taken to the Lethem Hospital by his reputed wife where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

It was reported by police sources within the division that the victim was earlier imbibing with his wife and other friends, a little distance from where the murder took place. The motive for the stabbing is unclear as nothing was taken from the victim.

The murder weapon was not recovered but two other pieces of items which were left behind by the suspect were picked up by the police.

According to the police, statements were obtained and investigators are following all leads to solve this crime.
