Pedestrian killed by cop, Constable crashes car

Police are investigating a fatal accident on the Soesdyke Public Road, East Bank Demerara, involving Motor Car PPP 8497 driven by a Police Constable, which struck down and killed a so far unidentified male pedestrian.

A police report noted that the accident occurred at approximately 03:00h Sunday.  Investigations revealed that at the time of the accident, the Police Constable was taking a Policeman, who was injured in a previous accident, to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre, escorted by a police vehicle with its siren and flashing lights on.

It is alleged by the Police Constable that he swerved from the pedestrian, who was on the center of the road but he [pedestrian] was struck down. The cop then picked up the injured man, placed him in the said vehicle along with the injured policeman and took them to the East Bank Demerara Public Hospital where the pedestrian was pronounced dead on arrival.

The already injured policeman was identified as Gavin Gentle of Bartica Police Station; he was treated and transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation and admitted in a serious but stable condition. According to the police report, Constable Gavin Gentle was proceeding south on the Timehri Public Road about 02:30h this morning in Motor Car PTT 5444, when he lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a utility pole and sustained injuries. News Room understands that he was driving his own car at the time of the accident.

The Police Constable who was driving the car that killed the pedestrian, was tested and no alcohol was detected in his breath. Investigations are in progress.
