Police are investigating the murder of 53-year-old Mohabeer Gangdeen, a miner of Old Road, Timehri, East Bank Demerara, who was beaten to death allegedly by a colleague on Saturday, August 12 at Pataro Backdam.
News Room was reliably informed that the murder took place at around 17:30hrs and that the suspect, 35-year-old Naresh Baldeo, also a miner of Yarrowkabra, Soesdyke, Linden Highway, is in police custody.
According to information reaching the News Room, detectives visited the scene on Sunday and found a white spade, suspected to be the murder weapon; detectives also observed multiple blood stains under a 12-inch red metal water dredge, that the two men were guarding.
News Room understands that detectives found the dead man clad in only his underwear, facing upwards with multiple laceration on his head, hand and back with black and blue marks about his body. According to reports, on Saturday, the two men were alone on the water dredge consuming high wine and vodka rum when Gangdeen accused the suspect of stealing gold. An argument ensued and Gangdeen reportedly picked up a white spade and dealt the suspect several lashes about his hand and left face.
Reports indicate that the suspect then took away the spade and dealt Gangdeen several lashes about his body and later pushed him into the water. According to reports, the suspect them pulled the man out of the water, but Gangdeen subsequently died. The suspect initially reported that Gangdeen was drunk and fell into the water and drowned.
However, one of the detectives noticed the marks of violence on both the skin of the deceased and the suspect. The suspect was grilled by the detectives, during which he reportedly confessed to the crime.
