Ranks of the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) acted on a tip and swooped down at Lot 82 St Stephens, Charlestown, Georgetown where they intercepted large quantities of what is suspected to be marijuana and cocaine.

A couple has been arrested and are assisting with the investigation.

CANU’s Deputy Head Mr. Leslie Ramlall said CANU had the house under surveillance and it is suspected that the marijuana originated from Colombia.

“We did receive information sometime this morning of the possibility of narcotics being stored at this location and based on that we conducted our own surveillance and what we saw was the person we currently have in custody.

“He arrived this morning in motorcar PPP 3008. Shortly after we saw a 42 minibus arrived as well. The suspect went into the house and came out with a black plastic bag which he handed over to the driver of the minibus. He then returned to the house and came out with another bag which he placed in the back seat of the car and then walked away up the street, where the ranks intercepted him then and brought him back to the car where he opened the car…the ranks found the black plastic bag which we suspected to have cannabis,” the CANU Deputy head told reporters.

CANU also searched the house, where they found more suspected narcotics and a woman inside. She too was arrested.

The CANU Deputy said the drug may have been delivered to Guyana within the last 48 hours.

“This is narcotics that came out of Columbia commonly known as the poppy weed and this would have come within the last 48 hours to this location.”

Ramlall said it was because of actions by public-spirited persons that the bust was made and urged persons to continue with the tips.
