Stag, Promoter Ross unveil ‘Skills for Gold’ 7-a-side football

Ansa McAl Trading under its popular Stag Beer and Promoter Borris Ross on Friday unveiled the ‘Skills for Gold’ seven-a-side football tournament, which is set to kick off Saturday night (December 9) with three games at the Number Five ground in Berbice.

Sixteen teams have been confirmed to compete for top prize of $200,000 and 10 gold rings.

In the opening game at 18:00h, Golden Grove will take on Mahaicony FC, while Rosignol Under-20 will come up against Lichfield Net Rockers. In the evening’s final game, Monedderlust A will tackle Orealla Falcons.

Promoter Ross said, “Football is a big deal in West Coast Berbice and we believe that this tournament will be big and is the first of many to come.” Ross pointed out that the idea to have such a tournament in the area was first discussed with friends at a Barber Shop.

One of the 10 gold rings that are up for grabs

According to Ross, making the prize for the tournament attractive is one way of bringing out the best of the teams and players. The 10 gold rings, the organisers stated, are valued $25,000 each.

The team finishing second will pocked $100,000 and also receive 10 silver rings. Teams finishing third and fourth are set to go home with $50,000 and $25,000 respectively.

Stag Beer Brand Manager, Lyndon Henry, said, “This is what we do as a company and this sponsorship reflects Ansa McAl’s eagerness to help develop sports in Guyana.” 

All matches will be played at the Number Five ground. The competition will come to an end on December 30.
