Inspector killed in Rupununi accident, other cops injured
The Guyana Police Force mourns the death of 38-year-old Inspector Ian Welch, who died in a vehicular accident at around 17:15hrs on Tuesday, February 13, 2018, at Rattle Snake Hill, Trail Road, Central Rupununi.
Police in a statement said that Inspector Welch was seated in the front seat of the police force vehicle PVV 662 when it suffered a ‘blow out’ of its right rear wheel and turned turtle twice before coming to a halt. He died on the spot.
The ranks were on patrol duty at the time of the accident.
The driver, Constable Lyzandel Northe and the other occupants – Corporal Fitzgerald Adolphus, Special Constable Ryan Doris and Rural Constable Chavez Francis – received minor injuries and are being kept for observation at the Lethem Regional Hospital.
Inspector Welch was married and resided at Rose Hall Town, Corentyne, Berbice; he joined the Force on May 5, 1999, and was recently recognized by the Force after being adjudged third place winner of its Quarterly Essay Competition.
