Alleged drunk driver kills pensioner

A 73-year-old pedal cyclist of Lima Sands, Essequibo Coast was on Thursday killed after he was struck down by a speeding motor car.

A police report stated that at about 14:00hrs on Thursday, motorcar – PVV 8733 – driven by a 30-year-old resident also of Lima Sands, was proceeding south along the Coffee Grove Public Road, Essequibo Coast when he lost control on a turn and collided with Percy Lashley.

Lashley, who was proceeding in the same direction, was picked up and taken to Suddie Public Hospital where he succumbed while receiving medical treatment.

The alcohol level of the driver was found to be exceedingly above the legal limit, police said.

He was taken into custody and is assisting in the investigation

The driver was previously charged and fined $7,500 in 2016, for driving under the influence of alcohol, the police said.
