Officers on duty at the Lusignan Prison successfully stopped the plans of two prisoners, who attempted to escape the facility between Thursday and 08:30hrs on Friday.

The two prisoners were charged with murder and are committed to stand trial in the High Court.

According to Director of Prisons (ag), Gladwin Samuels, during security checks, one steel bar was discovered cut while attempts were being made to cut another.

From observations, he said the cutting of the second bar was to allow easier exit.

Given that the prisoners should not have been in possession of cutting equipment, the police were called in to launch a full investigation, the acting Director said.

As a result of the incident, the prisoners’ security classification has increased and additional layers of security are in place, he added.
