Police and prison officials are investigating the death of a prisoner who died on Saturday at the Mazaruni Prison.

Initial inquiries revealed that Gary Stuart along with other inmates were working at the BK International Quarry in Bartica, Region Seven on Thursday.

The men were washing and painting the Quarry boats when they reportedly found a bottle containing what is suspected to be alcohol and snuck the liquid back into the prison.

Senior Superintendent at the prison, Kofi David told investigators that the inmates consumed the liquid.
At about 05:15hrs on Saturday, Stuart began crying out for pain in his stomach and was escorted to the Bartica Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

His body was examined and only a 1cm abrasion on his left-hand palm was found.

The body is at the hospital’s mortuary awaiting a post mortem examination.

Police did not say how long Stuart was imprisoned or the crime he allegedly committed.
