16 years jail for Tuschen man found guilty of rape

A 59-year-old Uitvlugt Sugar Estate, West Coast Demerara employee was on Thursday afternoon sentenced to 16 years in imprisonment for raping a 25-year-old woman on April 11, 2017, in the county of Essequibo.

Mahadeo Dasrat known as ‘Bahhagee’ of Tuschen Old Road, East Bank Essequibo was sentenced by Justice Brassington Reynolds at the High Court.

On Wednesday, a 12-member mixed jury found Dasrat guilty of the offence.

He was represented by Attorney Rabindra Mohabir while the State was represented by Prosecutor Seeta Bishundial.

Probation Officer Nichole Foo read the victim’s impact statement in court.

“I went through a lot of pain and was afraid that he would have chop meh head and left meh fuh dead,” the victim said in her statement.

The victim, who is now 27 years old, said that the incident left her feeling disgraced since Dasrat took her virginity and was afraid that no one would marry her.

Dasrat’s Attorney, in mitigation, told his court that his client is employed as a water fetcher at the sugar estate and is the sole breadwinner for his family which includes his wife and two grandchildren.

Prosecutor Bishundial told the court that Dasrat was convicted of an armed robbery charge which stemmed from the same incident.

The News Room was informed that Dasrat had served a one-year imprisonment for the robbery under arms charge.

The Judge started off the sentence at a base of 20 years; he deducted one year for showing remorse and three years because he took care of his grandchildren.

In the end, Dasrat was sentenced to serve 16 years imprisonment.
