A Mahaica, East Coast Demerara man on Tuesday confessed to killing his girlfriend Hafeeza Rohoman, whose lifeless body was found floating in a canal at Helena, Mahaica in 2016.

Lakeram Harinarine known as ‘Ricky’ formerly of Helena Mahaica, appeared before Justice Jo-Ann Barlow to face the charge of murder but opted to plead to the lesser count of manslaughter.

Harinarine admitted that he committed the act between January 7-10, 2016.

The man admitted that he hit the woman to the head with a bicycle bar and she fell overboard. Harinarine said he committed the act because Rohoman decided to end their marriage.

He will re-appear in court on December 12 for sentencing.

The woman was last seen alive on January 7, 2016, and three days later her partially decomposed body was pulled out from a nearby canal.

A post mortem revealed that she died from drowning, but there was evidence to support that she received blows to the head.

The Police arrested Harinarine following reports that he would usually beat the woman.

EDITOR’s NOTE: This story initially stated that the victim was the wife of the accused, however, it has since been amended to reflect accuracy.
