Police Corporal dies in boat accident

The body of 43-year-old Police Corporal Peter Scipio was pulled from the Berbice River Saturday morning after he and three other Police Officers fell overboard.

The News Room understands that about eight Police Officers were heading into the Berbice River to deal with reports made by persons when the incident occurred between 8am and 10am.

Scipio, a father of three adult children, was said to be the Boat Captain and while in the vicinity of Bermine Junction, the boat began to take in water.

The News Room was told that the waves were treacherous and caused Scipio and other others to fall overboard; while the three officers surfaced, Scipio did not.

His colleagues launched a search and Scipio’s body was found two hours later.

The Police Corporal’s brother, Cleveland Scipio was moved to tears as he described his only sibling as loving, caring and a committed individual.

“He was everything to me and his children. After our parents died he took care and responsibility over me and his children. This is a real big loss to us,” the tearful brother told the News Room.

Cleveland said he was at work when he received a telephone call that his brother was involved in an accident.

“They didn’t tell me he died so is when I reach over by the stelling then the Police tell me.”

Cleveland told the News Room that he last saw his brother on Friday night and he was reluctant to go on the trip but still went ahead because of he was duty-bound.

The Police Corporal was stationed at the Central Police Station in New Amsterdam and lived with his girlfriend at Stanleytown but he is originally from Ogleton Street, Angoy’s Avenue, greater New Amsterdam.

An investigation has been launched into the accident.
