The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) is likely to conclude the recount of ballot boxes from Region Five on Monday.

On Sunday, GECOM completed the recount of 75 ballot boxes of which 14 belongs to Region Five; there are seven outstanding ballot boxes to be counted.

The counting stations allocated to that Region could move on to counting Region Eight which is the smallest district with just 55 ballot boxes.

However, party agents have been advocating for more stations to be allocated to Region Four – Guyana’s largest voting district- which has 606 boxes left to be completed.

As such, GECOM will decide Monday whether to allocate the counting stations to Region 8 or Region 4.

Fifteen ballot boxes were counted for Region Three on Sunday, 19 from Region Four, 20 from Region Six and seven for Region Seven.

The total number of boxes now recounted so far is. 1,124 while the total number of ballot boxes left to be counted is 1,215.

GECOM is working with twelve recount stations having added two more on Tuesday last to speed up the process.

The Commission is seeking advice from the National COVID-19 Task Force (NCTF) to add two more stations in an effort to increase the pace of the recount.

The recount commenced on May 6 with a 25-day deadline which comes to an end of May 30; the Commission is yet to decide whether the deadline will be extended and for how long.
