Just 24 hours after 485 people tested positive for COVID-19, Health Minister Dr. Frank Anthony has stated that another 788 people have also tested positive for the virus adding to the growing number of active cases in Guyana.

Active cases refer to the number of people currently infected and currently, Guyana has a total of 2,554 active cases.

A majority of these active cases – some 1,648 infected people – reside in Region Four. In Region Six, there are 338 active cases while 206 cases are in Region Three, 115 cases are in Region Nine and 82 are in Region 10.

It is important to note that these new cases came from only 1,878 tests.

“As we anticipated with Omicron, what we will see because of its contagiousness…is an increase in cases especially if people are not abiding by the public health measures,” Dr. Anthony lamented during his daily COVID-19 update.

The Health Minister noted that the new Omicron variant is leading to a significant increase in the number of cases and further infections are suspected.

Meanwhile, 59 people are hospitalised across the country after experiencing the more severe and life-threatening symptoms of the disease; 36 individuals are at the Ocean View facility with five people receiving critical care in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
