There will be no Aliann Pompey Invitational this year.

That’s the word from founder of the meet, former national athlete and four-time Olympian, Aliann Pompey.

The event was slated for June 18 at the National Track and Field Centre, Leonora, West Coast Demerara.

Pompey told the News Room Sport: “It’s with great sadness and regret that we announce the cancellation of this year’s API. We took some time to explore all possible options, and it was decided the best course of action was to put it off for next year.”

While a specific reason for the cancellation was not offered, the news is a major disappointment for athletes and fans, who have become accustomed to the high-quality meet featuring top local and overseas athletes.

The Invitational, which started in 2016, was last held in 2019. The 2020 and 2021 editions were called off due to COVID-19 restrictions.
