Update: Bandit begged businessman to take his life – wife tells police

Anil Singh, a 34-year-old businessman of Unity Street La Grange, West Bank Demerara shot and killed a bandit during a home invasion in the wee hours of Wednesday.

Police Headquarters confirmed that Singh is a licensed firearm holder and had a .32 Taurus Pistol.

He was at home at the time with his wife, 32-year-old Christina Singh and children.

The dead bandit has been identified as Learone Forde; his age and address are unknown at this time.

According to the police, Singh and his wife retired to bed at about 10:00hrs on Tuesday but were awakened at about 01:30hrs by the sound of a window to their apartment being pried open.

Singh then armed himself with his licensed .32 Taurus Pistol and stood behind the door of his bedroom while his wife and child remain on their bed.

It is alleged that two suspects, one armed with a cutlass and one with a crowbar, then rushed into their bedroom; Singh discharged his weapon and shot one of the bandits in the leg while the other escaped in an unknown direction.

According to the report from Police Headquarters, the wounded bandit allegedly began to beg Singh to take his life by shooting him; this is based on information provided to the police by the wife.

The wife claimed that Singh refused to kill the bandit and a scuffle ensued between them which resulted in several shots being discharged which caused injuries to both Singh and the bandit.

The matter was reported to the police and upon arrival at the scene, one of the suspects was discovered lying in a pool of blood, with several gunshot wounds about the head and body while Singh also had gunshot wounds about his body.

The area was canvassed for CCTV cameras. The scene was processed and five spent shells of .32 ammunition, four live rounds and two metal fragments suspected to be warheads, were also found at the scene.

Singh was taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital where he was seen by a doctor and admitted as a patient for injuries received, while the suspect was taken to the Ezekiel Funeral home.

Police said the gun was lodged and the wife is currently in custody assisting with the investigation.
