Police Sergeant in fatal Berbice Bridge accident was speeding, remains in custody

The Guyana Police Force on Tuesday said that one of its Sergeants, Quacy Rose from the Tactical Services Unit in Georgetown, remains in custody as the probe continues into Sunday night’s fatal accident at the Berbice River Bridge.

In the first official statement from the Force, it noted that a breathalyzer test was conducted on the 35-year-old Sergeant and driver of motorcar PPP 2020 and the results read zero.

However, a notice of intended prosecution was served Rose.

Police said the accident which occurred at about 17:50hrs involved motorcycle #CL 6820 owned and driven by 43-year-old Aubrey Sears of 298 No. 9 Village West Coast Berbice.

According to reports, Rose was proceeding east at a fast rate of speed while the driver of motorcycle #CL 6802 was proceeding west along the southern drive lane, also at a fast rate of speed.

Rose alleges that Sears rode into his path and collided with the front right side of his vehicle.

As a result of the collision the motorcyclist fell onto the car bonnet then onto the front windscreen and onto the road surface and finally onto the southern grass parapet where he received injuries about his body.

He was pick up in an unconscious condition by public-spirited persons and taken to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital where he was seen and examined by a doctor on duty who pronounce him dead.

The body is presently lying at the Arokium Funeral Parlour awaiting post mortem examination.
