First Lady Arya Ali will be constructing a new home for a Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo family. The father, who was the family’s main provider, was diagnosed with prostate cancer and has been bedridden for the past three years, according to a statement released by Mrs. Ali on Monday.
As a result, the family of four has been living in deplorable conditions for several years.
The wife is unable to work because she spends her days attending taking care of her husband. The family depends on his pension, along with income from a small poultry business, to provide for their needs.
The couple’s two children will also be provided with scholarships upon the completion of their secondary education.
The First Lady along with several government officials recently visited the family.
“We spoke to the wife and I committed to having a new house built and semi-furnished within the next 6-8 weeks.
“Thanks to Minister Dharamlall (Minister of Local Government and Regional Development), the wife will gain employment through the government’s part-time employment programme, while the regional health office will assist the family with medical supplies,” Mrs Ali said in the statement.
