Construction worker remanded for partner’s murder

Days after he allegedly brutally beat his partner to death, 29-year-old Shivnanand Henry called ‘Sunny’, was on Friday charged with murder and remanded to prison.

Henry, a construction worker of Uitvlugt, West Coast Demerara (WCD) appeared before Magistrate Zamilla Ally-Seepaul at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court.

He was not required to enter a plea to the indictable charge and the case was adjourned to August 25 for report.

Forty-eight-year-old Bibi Naseefa Baksh was allegedly beaten during an argument on Sunday, July 02 at the Uitvlugt, WCD house she shared with Henry, his 61-year-old mother and her 12-year-old daughter.

Henry was arrested the following day.

Police said the couple would frequently fight and argue. According to the Police, the couple was imbibing when the argument erupted.

During the process, Police said Henry started to beat Baksh.

“…Kicking her down wooden stairs and dragging her to the roadway, where he dealt her several kicks and lashes with a piece of wood about her body,” Police explained.

Afterwards, Police said Baksh was assisted into the house and taken to her room by the suspect and her daughter.

Shortly after, she was observed motionless on her bed. There were wounds to her forehead, shoulder, arms and knees.

The suspect left the house and went in an unknown direction.

An alarm was raised by Baksh’s daughter and the Police were summoned.

Baksh’s body was escorted to the Leonora Cottage Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
