Venezuelan woman remanded for murder of drinking partner

Days after she confessed to the crime, Venezuelan national, Oriamna Naomi Silva Figuera was on Wednesday charged in relation to the fatal stabbing of her drinking partner at Kumung Kumung Backdam, Region Seven.

Figuera, 23, appeared before Magistrate Crystal Lambert at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court.

It is alleged that between August 17 and 18, 2023, she murdered John Fitzpatrick called ‘Sunny.’

Figuera was not required to enter a plea to the indictable charge and was remanded to prison; the matter was adjourned to September 13.

Fitzpatrick’s body was discovered in his camp on August 18 with several stab wounds.

Police Headquarters reported that the discovery was made hours after Fitzpatrick and Figuera had an altercation while imbibing alcohol together at a shop at Kumung Kumung Backdam after she refused to dance with him.

Figuera was subsequently arrested and during questioning, the Police said she admitted to stabbing Fitzpatrick with a retractable knife that she had in her possession.

“During the interview, she was cautioned by the Police and told of the allegation of the Murder of ‘Sunny’, to which she admitted whilst stating that the deceased had attacked her earlier in the night in question when she refused to dance with him at a shop Kumung Kumung,” Police Headquarters had said.
