Suspect shot by Police, confesses to killing Berbice businessman

Swift action by the Police in Berbice resulted in the capture of a lone bandit who murdered 59-year-old Akbhar Sain, a businessman of Williamsburg, Corentyne Berbice.

The suspect, identified as Satesh Ramnerish, was shot in the right arm by the Police when he attempted to escape; he was found in possession of cash stashed in his crotch.

The robbery/murder of the Berbice businessman occurred at his Williamsburg home where he operates a supermarket on the lower flat. The suspect broke into the premises at around 01:30 hrs.

Police Headquarters noted that Commander Shivpersad Bacchus and a team of Police officers and ranks responded to the scene.

Upon arrival, they observed the grill to the southern side of the businessman’s home was pried open; Sain, who lived alone, was seen lying motionless on the supermarket floor with blood on his face.

The cashier area was ransacked and the businessman’s licensed firearm (.32 pistol and a magazine with eight .32 rounds of ammunition) was seen close to his body.

Police said Sain was beaten in the head with a piece of wood.

At about 05:00 hrs, Police ranks canvassed the area twice when the suspect was found hiding behind a washing machine in the back verandah in the upper flat of the two-storey house.

“The Police challenged him, and he received a shot in the right arm,” the Police noted.

The suspect was escorted to the Port Mourant Public Hospital.

According to the Police, the suspect said after he broke into the premises, he had a scuffle with the victim, during which he hit him with a piece of wood to his head, causing him to collapse to the ground.

“The suspect said he then proceeded into the residence and stole the cash the Police found on his person.”

In addition to the businessman’s gun, Police also found a total of 50 live rounds on the. A crowbar and a piece of wood was also recovered at the scene.

Neighbors said they were awakened by screams for help from Sain’s property and they immediately contacted the Police.

The businessman’s body is presently at the mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination. His family resides overseas and is expected to return to Guyana shortly.

Sain has been operating the supermarket for over 40 years.

“No matter how busy he was, if you had a problem he was always willing to give a listening ear. Mr. Akhbar Sain would give a apart of him if necessary to anybody who came and asked, the community all respected him and his generosity is known,” a tearful resident told the News Room at the scene.

    My sympathy goes out to the family of Mr Salim. He is gone but itot forgotten. He is indeed gone too soon. I often wonder why must the good die so violently?. It is never a wise thing to live alone. This is so sad. May his soul rest in oeace
