PPP fighting to keep the ‘soul’ of Guyana alive – President Ali

In a passionate address calling for greater political consciousness, President Dr. Irfaan Ali says the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) is engaged in a fight to keep the “soul” of Guyana alive and well.

The Head of State spoke at the PPP’s annual memorial event for former Presidents Dr. Cheddi Jagan and Janet Jagan at Babu Jaan, Port Mourant, Region Six (East Berbice- Corentyne).

And though he reflected on the creation of the PPP, and Dr. Jagan’s role in founding the party and helping to guide Guyana towards independence from British rule, President Ali said the party is still fighting to protect the country today.

For him, there are “forces” keen on usurping power through rigged elections.

He referenced reports of former Prime Minister Hamilton Greene backing rigged elections to keep the PPP out of office and lambasted Greene and the APNU+AFC opposition for those remarks.

“Those are the enemy of the soul of our nation, and we must destroy them by truth, we must destroy them with facts and by hard work in every community, in every street and in every home,” the President said.

And he vowed that the PPP will continue to work towards uplifting citizens and protecting their dignity.

“There are still forces out there that believe we don’t have the finesse or we don’t have the sophistication to stay in government… but what we do every single day is we do what is right for the people of this country,” President Ali said, sounding as though he was on the verge of losing his voice.

Pushing back against racism, he said, is also the “fundamental principle” of the party and he promised the gathering of PPP/C members and supporters that it will continue to be.
