High Street Accident: Woman ran into truck – Police

Police investigators are probing an accident along High Street, Georgetown Wednesday night that left a woman, 36-year-old Nina Williams, dead.

The accident occurred around 22: 30 hrs and involved a motor lorry – GAC 5056 – driven by a 24-year-old man from Coconut Walk, Unity, East Coast Demerara.

According to a statement from Police Headquarters, the lorry was proceeding south along High Street, while the woman was crossing from east to west. As she was in the center of the street, she reportedly ran in a western direction into the path of the motor lorry.

As a result of the collision, the woman was dragged some distance from the point of impact, receiving fatal injuries on her body.

Williams was pronounced dead on the scene by Emergency Medical Technicians. Her body is currently at the Memorial Gardens Mortuary, awaiting a postmortem examination.

A breathalyzer test was conducted on the 24-year-old driver, which showed his BAC at .00%.

He remains in custody, assisting with the investigation.

    I always say when crossing the road, look East, look West, then look East again… before crossing.
    Same goes for North, South and North again.
    If reports are correct, by her friends, allegedly, they were having some “drinks”.
    That could have clouded her judgment, crossing.
