Relatives early Tuesday morning recovered the body of 42-year-old Shunny Jagessar, a fisherman who fell into the Corentyne River on Sunday.

Relatives told the News Room that four boats were searching for the man’s body with help from ranks at the Orealla Police Station when the discovery was made at around 07:00hrs.

Jagessar of Albert Street, No.79 Village, East Berbice Corentyne left to go fishing with his 50-year-old boat captain in the vicinity of Orealla Village when he reportedly fell overboard.

The captain, who was arrested after the incident, told police that they left the Springlands foreshore with their wooden vessel powered by a 40 horsepower engine.

The captain claimed he was at the bow of the boat while Jagessar was steering the vessel, pointing out that the water was calm but then he heard a splash and upon checking, he saw Jagessar struggling in the water.

He said he tried to search for Jagessar but it was futile and so he decided to inform the police and the relatives.
