The 23-year-old woman who was Thursday morning stabbed to death was constantly abused by her husband over the eight years that they shared a relationship.
Dead is Deomattie Persaud of Belmont, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara (ECD). She was reportedly stabbed to death by her 43-year-old husband, Dhanraj Maraj.
News Room spoke with the dead woman’s mother, Anita, who said her daughter moved out of her husband’s house about a month ago but he called her to pick up their two children, ages 5 and 7.
Reports are that Persaud arrived at the home in a taxi to pick up the children but her husband dragged her out of the car and stabbed her several times. The woman was left to bleed on the road and eventually succumbed.
After committing the gruesome act, Maraj then retreated to the house where he locked himself in and consumed a poisonous substance. News Room understands that when police arrived on the scene, they had to break a window to get into the house where they found the man in the upper flat of the two-story building. He was rushed to the Mahaicony Cottage Hospital and remains hospitalised.
According to the Persaud’s mother, Maraj and her daughter would fight a lot. She said her daughter moved out several times in the past and whenever she returned home to collect clothes or other items she would take the Police.
The last time the woman moved out, their two children were left in the care of her mother, but a few days ago Maraj picked up the children and took them to his home.
