Toddler, 3, dies after hit by car while crossing road

Daniel Major, a 3-year-old of Islington Village, East Bank Berbice, has succumbed to injuries he sustained after being hit by a motor car while attempting to cross the Canefield Public Road, East Canje, Berbice.

Police Headquarters reported that the accident occurred on Sunday at about 19:45 hours and involved a hire car, HA 9700, driven by 21-year-old Claudwin McDonald of Goed Bananen Land, East Canje, Berbice.

According to the report, McDonald was proceeding along the Canefield Public Road when Major, who was alone at the said time, attempted to cross the road and ended up in the path of the vehicle.

The driver, in an attempt to avoid hitting the toddler, applied brakes and swerved left. However, despite the driver’s effort, the right side front of the car collided with Major.

As a result of the collision, the child received injuries about the body.

He was picked up by the driver in an unconscious condition and taken to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, where he was admitted as a patient in the accident and emergency unit suffering from a fractured rib.

Unfortunately, Major succumbed to his injuries at approximately 10:45 hours on Monday at the New Amsterdam Public Hospital while receiving treatment.

A breathalyser test conducted on the driver showed a reading of .00% microgram.

The body of Daniel Major is at the Hospital’s mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.
