Dr Asha Kissoon, the leader of The New Movement (TNM), is expected to replace Lenox Shuman as Parliamentarian, multiple sources have confirmed.

Dr Kissoon, 33, studied medicine in Cuba, and currently serves as the doctor in charge of the Sophia Health Centre, entered politics for the March 2, 2020 elections and was the presidential candidate for TNM. The party together with A New and United Guyana (ANUG) and the Liberty and Justice Party (JLP) joined their lists to contest the elections.

She was the only female candidate and the youngest candidate to run for President in the 2020 elections.

The combined votes gained in the elections allowed the three parties to have one seat in the National Assembly. They had agreed that the seat would be rotated so that all three parties would have representation in the five-year term of the Parliament.

The News Room understands that the parties met and agreed that Dr Kissoon be their next Parliamentary representative and have written the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) accordingly.

Shuman served as Deputy Speaker and resigned his post to allow for the new representative, now identified as Dr Kissoon, to be sworn in.

The Deputy Speaker position traditionally goes to the Opposition side of the House. It now remains to be seen if Dr Kissoon will secure the votes to serve as Deputy Speaker.
