President Dr. Irfaan Ali has assigned a government minister to to each of the families affected by the horrific Mahdia Secondary School Female dormitory fire as the government looks to provide comprehensive support in their time of need.
The Head of State, in a live update to the nation on Tuesday afternoon, reiterated the assurances given the day prior.
The Cabinet members are tasked with directly engaging the families who lost their children or have their children receiving treatment.
“Whilst we appreciate all the offers for support, I want to assure all the families and all Guyanese that the government will support all the families and these children.
“We will provide all that is necessary,” Dr. Ali said.
Currently, 17 girls are receiving treatment at the Georgetown Public Hospital Coration (GPHC). On Monday, the nine girls in need of critical care were airlifted to Georgetown.
On Tuesday, another eight were brought to the city and President Ali says the government has offered to bring all of the affected girls to the GPHC for a second review.
Teams to provide psychosocial support have been established and dispatched wherever the girls and their families are. Those teams, he said, will remain in place for at least the next three months.
