Diamond businessman, wife robbed of $6M

Wange Wi, a 32-year-old Chinese businessman of Diamond Public Road, East Bank Demerara (EBD), and his 31-year-old wife were held at gunpoint during a robbery early Saturday morning.

Police Headquarters reported that the businessman was robbed of $6 million by three men armed with handguns. Two of the men wore ski masks to hide their faces.

The couple reside in the upper flat of a three-storey concrete building; the bottom flat is a hardware store.

The businessman told Police Officers that he closed the store at around 20:00 hrs on Friday and counted his money; it amounted to $6 million. The cash was taken to the businessman’s bedroom and secured in a black haversack.

But at 02:00 hrs the next morning, the man and his wife heard persons shouting at them. It was then the three suspects asked them for the money while holding them at gunpoint.

The businessman reported that the gunmen later bounded him and his wife and ransacked the room. They eventually found the haversack with the cash and escaped with it.

Sometime after however, the businessman said he was able to free himself and his wife and they reported the crime to the Police.

Investigations later revealed that the suspects gained entry by climbing onto the roof of the building and cutting a hole in the zinc roof. Then, they cut through the ceiling which is made of sheetrock and jumped into the open area of the upper flat. It was then they gained entry into the victims’ bedroom.

Two sets of fingerprints were lifted from the DVR which the suspects removed but did not take, Police said.

Investigations are ongoing.
